How To Dry Herbs In The Air
There are several types of herbs that are easily dried using air and understanding how to dry these herbs is easily done. Herbs that are best suited for this type of drying are herbs that have less moisture and will be faster drying. Such fresh herbs as Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano, Dill, Bay and others are great for air drying. To dry these types of herbs the grower should gather a bunch of healthy branches from the plants being sure to remove dead or scanty areas.
The herbs should be dried before they flower for the best taste and effect. The bunch can be carefully placed in a light weight plastic bag with several air holes poked in it. The plastic bag will help keep the herbs clean and prevent loosing bits as the herbs dry, although, some people prefer to hang the herbs without the plastic bag. The herb bunch can then be hung in a dry, airy room of the home for about two weeks until completely dry.
How To Dry Herbs In Heat
It is important to understand how to dry herbs that may have higher moisture content. Herbs such as Basil, Tarragon, Chives and Mint will all require a faster, more intense drying method to prevent the growth of mold or fungus due to the excess moisture. A great way to dry these types of herbs is to use a home dehydrator. These inexpensive machines are easy to purchase at many departments stores and usually come with good instructions for drying all sorts of foods including herbs.
People who do not have or can not purchase a dehydrator can use the oven in their home with some success. The oven should be set to a low temperature under 200 degrees and the herbs placed on a cookie sheet in the oven for three to four hours.
When the herbs are completely dry the leaves can be stripped from their branches, crushed up, and stored in an airtight, dry container. Using these home grown, home dried herbs will be both rewarding and tasty. This is also a cost saving way to have fresh, organically grown herbs.
